Plants

Plants are not only enjoyable but beneficial. They offer great health benefits and are an amazing addition to your home. Plants add a fresh and calm aesthetic to any room. Along with the aesthetic improvements you could also experience balanced humidity and improved air quality. This is something that could be soothing if you have seasonal allergies, asthma, or even a dry-aired climate.

balances humidity

Plants tend to give off as much water as they consume. This could add humidity to the air in that room. It’s believed that low humidity levels can result in dry skin, dry mouth, lung irritation, and more issues. Plants can help balance the humidity. This also helps with your electricity bill! There’s no need to buy a humidifier that needs to be plugged in, just add some plants to the rooms you notice are dry. You’ll quickly notice a difference.

Plants can even absorb extra moisture in the air. The rooms that tend to be over-humid, such as a bathroom or kitchen, plants can help balance. They do this by either absorbing the extra moisture in the air or releasing the moisture as needed. The added balance to your house’s humidity will often aid in soothing respiratory irritation or inflammation. Living in Colorado, our air is very dry which is a big shock to my body coming from Illinois, where humidity is high. I’ve noticed a big improvement in the humidity of our air with my plants versus not.

improves air quality

Plants remarkably improve air quality as well. With pollution continuously on the rise, especially in cities, we could all use some cleaner air. Pollutants bring in bacteria and viruses which contribute to colds, flu, and illness. Plants can take in those pollutants and release cleaner, fresher air. They can also take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen instead. With more oxygen comes better health. When you’re able to breathe cleaner air and breathe more oxygen, it helps aid your body’s function more effectively and allows your brain to improve connections and fatigue.

Almost every plant out there can give you balanced humidity and improved air quality. Two plants I have that remove chemicals are Spider Plants, which remove formaldehyde, xylene, and toluene as well as Golden Pothos, which removes benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene, and toluene. Several of these chemicals have been linked to causing cancer. Luckily, plants can take in these chemicals and transfer them to their soil so they are used as food for the plant. In exchange, we receive cleaner and healthier air.
